The Sound of Red Stone
The Sound of Red Stone is one of the booknook projects I designed for MINICITY.
A booknook (bookshelf insert) is a miniature, self-contained diorama that slides between books and opens a tiny window to another world.
This piece draws on the late-Gothic rib vault system: red-brown sandstone-like “ribs” outline a spatial skeleton, while thin web/panel infills complete the vault shell—an approach seen in landmarks such as Cologne Cathedral (Kölner Dom) and Westminster Abbey.
The visual focal point is a monumental pipe organ at the far end. Its vertical ranks echo the rhythm of the ribs, anchoring the composition and imparting a calm, solemn mood. Using flat wooden sheets to suggest masonry logic was a challenge; in manufacturing, repeated cuts allow thin boards to bend into vaults. The interior also employs forced perspective (larger front, smaller back) to heighten vertical grandeur within a compact footprint.

My Role
I led the creative and spatial design: worldbuilding/backstory, research on rib-vault structures, forced-perspective layout, material and lighting palette, and 3D modeling/visuals in Rhino & Blender; I also prepared copy and illustrations for presentation. Not in scope: manufacturing cutting sheets, assembly manual, or physical assembly/fit tests. llustrations and most UV maps were generated with AI and then refined by me.
